Up close and Personal

I am Shahnawaaz Shaikh

My parents named me so that they could rhyme my name to my elder brother Sarfaraaz. Guess they took ‘life is a poem’ quote too literally. My name for most is like a tongue twister. Hence, my short, sweet and tongue friendly name is Shaan. I studied Electrical Engineering in SDMCET, Dharwad because that was the closest thing to home, and miraculously I ended up with a degree. (Ask me an electrical question today and I will fail spectacularly.)

I love spending my free time with my lovely pet turtle – Godzilla, Water coloring seascapes, writing poems, composing/singing songs and playing my ukulele, playing a lot of PC games, and traveling around the world. One of my mantras in life is to push myself to limits in both life and career goals, but I make sure not to forget to take it slow. I am in my mid 20’s, perhaps the most fun times in my life, and I try to enjoy while I can.

I appreciate the beauty of nature and the perfect balance it maintains. That is what I try to implement in my designs. All the complexities – underneath a beautiful skin.

Design is all about experiment

"Those who look for seashells will find seashells; those who open them will find pearls."
- Al-Ghazali

As a product manager, I listen and understand user stories and then approach the design implementation. To understand the color science better I started to paint. I cannot stress this enough to other designers, it is the most important thing to do. Paint, feel the colors. The colors transmit energy and further transcend emotions. For me, the design is just that transcending emotions in the most efficient way possible.

Planning is essential

Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised.
- Denis Waitley

As a startup, When we started working on Amazwing. We did assume a lot of things. Things like user on boarding process, minimum knowledge that the user has, back end technology limitations and front end design to development limitations.

We learned from our mistakes and we started out with the plan. Charted each and every minute detail and further executed everything using scrum methodologies.

The same experience translated into my day to day work at Kodegear. The thoroughly studied Scrum techniques help me and my team to deliver top-notch products that satisfy the customers need.

It’s like what Rafiki (Lion King) says ” The way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it.”

"Creativity takes courage"

ever since the beginning, I had a great interest in arts. As a kid, I’d doodle all day. Later I progressed to sketching more detailed figures. During high school, I tried creative writing mostly in my mother tongue ‘Urdu’.

I grabbed an amazing opportunity at a national level poetry competition where I was honored the pleasure of meeting Ex-President of India – Dr. APJ Abdul Kalaam. This was my calling.

I moved to Jaipur, Rajasthan to continue my job as an electrical engineer. During my week offs I learned to play piano and ukulele from YouTube and composed a few songs.

I started a community of artists in my city Dharwad. On a weekly basis, all the artist and gather and showcase their talent. The sole purpose of these meetups is to encourage artists and mutually learning new things to develop skills and creativity.

I strongly believe that positivity transcends without any medium.
